hospitalization

It may be necessary to hospitalize patients with bipolar disorder during severe manic or depressive episodes .

We must use the hospital if symptoms are uncontrollable and expose patients to serious risks because , for example, aggressive behavior, risk taking , neglect of personal needs or suicidal tendencies .

Voluntary and involuntary admissions

Typically , patients are hospitalized voluntarily . This means they are free to leave the hospital at any time they wish. However, in Ontario , as in most other jurisdictions, the law also allows a doctor ( who does not have to be a psychiatrist ) to hospitalize a patient against his will. This can happen if the doctor determines that the patient is likely to injure themselves or someone else because of his illness. If the patient has not seen a doctor , his family can also ask a magistrate to undergo a psychiatric evaluation , and must submit convincing evidence that the illness of the patient is a danger to himself or his entourage.

Legal provisions protecting the rights of patients admitted to hospital involuntarily . For example, a human rights adviser will visit him to make sure he has the opportunity to file an appeal of his involuntary hospitalization by an independent panel of lawyers , physicians and non- professionals, if desired.

Inpatient treatment

The hospital stay may last a few days, weeks or, rarely , months . During the first days of their stay , patients are usually asked to stay in the psychiatric ward (they are required to do if they were admitted involuntarily ) . As they recover , they may be allowed to attend other parts of the hospital or walk outside . Later , they will receive passes to spend the night or weekend home.

Patients participate in a variety of educational and therapeutic group programs during the day and evening , as well as individual sessions with doctors, nurses and others. Their drugs or their doses can be modified, and the family can be interviewed by medical personnel, social workers or other persons .

Discharge planning begins immediately after admission to the hospital. Patients should expect to leave the hospital as soon as reasonable arrangements have been made up and their symptoms will be reduced sufficiently to allow them to work safely and take care of themselves at home. It is not necessarily beneficial for the patient to stay in hospital when his condition improved . This could instead give rise to problems , weakening the link between the patient , his family and social network, and even reducing its autonomy.
